When bright rays of sunlight persistently reached into the windowless chamber through thin gaps between the wooden planks, practically stabbing Hebaâs eyelids, she had no choice but to squint one eye open, and then the other.
She was alone upon the makeshift bed, but Shaiâs warmth still lingered around her.
Inside her.
Even better, just as she wanted, his wonderful, masculine scent surrounded her, permeated her skin. She still tasted him in her mouth, her lips and tongue recalling vividly the various savory and sweet textures of his body. She still heard his low groans, deep sighs and husky rumbles in her head.
Visions of his golden-bronze skin glistening with sweat beneath the soft glow of the oil lamp still danced before her eyes. The hard rounds of his biceps and buttocks flexing, clenching, the corrugated ridges of his stomach tensing. The broad planes of his chest dusted with fine hair.
And the proud rise of his vein-wrapped cockâ¦long and thick, straight through the shaft but slightly curved upwards at the plump, weeping headâ¦
She tasted, heard and saw only him.
And it was heaven on earth. No afterlife could be better than the here and now as long as she had Shai.
He hadnât said anything after she took her first kiss from him. Not a single word. But heâd stared into her eyes and let her see him. Let her feel him, possess him and claim him.
She didnât understand everything he conveyed with those glittering golden eyes, but she knew how he made her feel:
Cherished. Honored. Protected andâ¦
Loved.
Involuntarily, she rubbed at a sudden sharp ache beneath her breastbone.
She didnât know anything of love. Shied away from the word even in her own mind.
She loved her Papa and her darling boy. She couldnât say whether she loved her mother; respected was more apt.
She loved Sitre In, and she liked Shaiâs parents very much. She was fond of Senenmut, and she trusted Pa-nahsy.
And she supposed they were all affectionate towards her in their own way. But none of them, including her beloved Papa, ever made her feel the way Shai did.
She supposed the sex had something to do with it. And yet, even without their physical intimacy, sheâd always felt somethingâ¦differentâ¦with regards to her Shadow. Heâd always made her feel different.
Special. Beautiful.
As if she was made just for him. And he was made just for her.
But dwelling on these thoughts worried and frightened her. Made her both elated and desperate. Terrified of losing herself to these intense, unknowable emotions.
She was a practical woman. She had to be. These feelings had no place in her fated path.
And yetâ¦
She reveled in them too. As confused as they made her feel, the emotions Shai evoked in her also lifted her up and made her stronger. More confident in herself as a woman first and foremost. Because she was secure in the admiration of the one man she trusted, desired and respected above all others.
With the same efficiency as she prepared for
